Defence Forces to buy €189m TNT explosives in 2028-2037

The Finnish Defence Forces will buy TNT (trinitrotoluene) high explosives worth EUR 189 million from Finnish company Forcit Pori Oy during the 2028-2037 period, said the Ministry of Defence in a press release.

Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen on Friday authorised the Finnish Defence Forces to sign the procurement contract.

The purchase is related to a project raising the efficiency of explosives production in Finland and securing access to domestically-produced TNT high explosives.

Forcit Pori Oy will build a new plant to meet the growing demand.

The plant is estimated to employ 70 people. It will have significant indirect effects especially on the logistics and chemicals industry.

In addition, the construction of the plant will create new jobs and benefit the City of Pori and its economic region.

"At the Ministry of Defence, we started preparing the construction of a TNT plant to safeguard domestic security of supply in Finland. The Finnish-owned TNT plant in Satakunta ensures that Finland will be able to rely on the domestic industry's capacity to produce high explosives for heavy ammunition," Häkkänen said.

Earlier in January 2025, the government announced that a new TNT (trinitrotoluene) factory will be built in Finland.
