A total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in Britain in the year to June 2025, the highest figure recorded for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001, official data showed Thursday, reported Xinhua.
According to the latest quarterly statistics from the Home Office, the number represents a 14 percent increase from the 97,107 applications filed during the same period last year.
The report noted that 39 percent of applicants arrived after crossing the English Channel in small boats, while 11 percent entered hidden in lorries, shipping containers, or without valid documents.
The data also revealed that 32,059 asylum seekers were housed in temporary accommodation across hotels in Britain during the first half of this year, marking an 8 percent rise compared with a year earlier.
The release comes just days after a court ordered the removal of more than 100 asylum seekers from a hotel in Essex, following a legal challenge by the local council amid ongoing protests near the site.
