Hummels set for official football farewell in Dortmund

Former World Cup winner Mats Hummels will lace his football boots once more on Sunday for his last German club Borussia Dortmund when they play against Juventus, reported dpa.

Hummels ended his career after a difficult final season at Roma following his Dortmund exit last year, but the 36-year-old centre back will get his farewell as part of Dortmund's official season opening.

He will remain in the sport as a Prime Video Champions League pundit but he also told broadcasters ZDF that he plans no real immediate full return to the pro football scene over the next year or two.

Hummels also admitted that "I would probably still be playing if my life outside of it would allow it," but his priorities have shifted.

He wants to spend more time with his young son, saying: "I don't want to do it as a sacrifice, seeing him so few times and spending so little time with him."

Travelling and running a podcast with his brother are other pastimes.

Hummels was a Bayern Munich academy product and spent two terms each at Bayern and Dortmund, winning five Bundesliga titles and three German Cups with them. He earned 78 Germany caps highlighted by the 2014 World Cup title.

Former Germany coach Joachim Löw praised Hummels as "one of the best defenders ever in the world," and his former Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp even compared him to Germany's biggest football icon.

"There was no player who came closer to Franz Beckenbauer in a similar position than Mats," Klopp said.
