Germany's opposition The Left party has urged the federal and state governments to bring seriously injured and traumatized children from Gaza, Israel and the West Bank to Germany for urgent medical treatment, reported dpa.
Party leader Ines Schwerdtner and fellow party member Charlotte Neuhäuser proposed activating a coordination system that was previously used to distribute Covid-19 patients and to rescue war casualties from Ukraine.
It consists of five regions in Germany and a joint situation centre run by the federal and state governments.
"Seriously injured, ill, and traumatized children from Palestine and Israel need our urgent humanitarian aid for life-saving operations, cancer, dialysis treatments and rehabilitation," Schwerdtner said, adding that hospitals and cities in Germany are ready to help, but the government has yet to act on the proposal.
The Interior Ministry and the Foreign Office said they were still assessing what form of assistance could be provided. Key factors under review include the security situation on the ground and the possibility of evacuations, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry said on Wednesday.
He added that the ministry is focusing on expanding medical assistance both locally and in the surrounding region.
The appeal follows similar demands from lawmakers in the Social Democratic Party (SPD), who earlier this week urged the government to take in injured children from Gaza. They noted that other European countries had already launched initiatives to evacuate wounded minors for treatment and criticized Berlin's hesitation to act.
