Sweden to host NATO logistics hub for troop movements in northern Europe

Sweden will host a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) logistics hub in the town of Enkoping to coordinate troop movements across northern Europe and from North America, the Swedish government announced on Thursday, reported Xinhua.

The decision came after negotiations with NATO and a formal invitation from Stockholm for the alliance to establish a logistics headquarters in Enkoping, about 70 kilometers northwest of the capital. Around 70 NATO staff will be employed at the new facility.

"Sweden's geographical location makes it a strategic transit point. Our ability to transport resources and personnel will be very important," said Defense Minister Pal Jonson.

The hub will manage large-scale troop movements, potentially involving up to 20,000 soldiers, and oversee the transport of fuel, ammunition, spare parts and other supplies across Swedish territory.

According to Swedish Television (SVT), the logistics headquarters in Enkoping will initially be set up within existing Armed Forces facilities. It will take the form of a "Joint Logistics Support Group" (JLSG), a structure NATO deploys in each regional operations area.

The Enkoping base will cover an area of operations including North America, the United Kingdom and the Nordic countries, SVT reported.
