Finnish firm to deliver quantum computer to US lab

Finnish quantum computing company IQM will deliver a 20-qubit superconducting quantum computer to the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the two sides announced Tuesday, reported Xinhua.

The system, scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2025, will be ORNL's first purchased on-premises quantum computer integrated into its high-performance computing systems. It is designed to be upgradeable to higher qubit counts, IQM said.

IQM Co-CEOs Mikko Valimaki and Jan Goetz said the deal underscores the growing usefulness of quantum computers and the company's intent to collaborate with ORNL researchers in areas such as fluid dynamics, particle physics and electronic structure simulations.

Founded in 2018 out of Aalto University and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, IQM has led Finland's drive in quantum technology. In March this year, VTT and IQM completed Europe's first 50-qubit superconducting quantum computer.

Yle, Finland's national broadcaster, described the U.S. deal as a milestone in the country's quantum ambitions.
