Trade balance posts €120m surplus in May

The trade balance showed a surplus of EUR 120 million in May 2025, according to the international trade in goods statistics released by Finnish Customs on Wednesday.

In January-May 2025, the trade balance had accumulated a deficit of EUR 452 million.

The aggregate trade surplus by commodity group increased for industrial machinery and equipment, metals and forest industry products.

The deficit increased for ores and metal scrap, chemicals and related products, and foods and beverages, but decreased for crude oil and refined petroleum products, transport equipment and electrical machinery and equipment.

According to the statistics, the value of Finnish exports of goods decreased by 5.8 per cent year-on-year in May.

The value of Finnish exports was EUR 5.9 billion. Export volume decreased by 4.2 per cent and export prices by 0.9 per cent year-on-year.

The value of imports decreased by 8.2 per cent in May to EUR 5.8 billion. Import prices declined by 3.8 per cent and import volume by 2.0 per cent compared to May 2024.

In January-May, the total value of exports increased by 5.3 per cent and the value of imports decreased by 1.8 per cent compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

Change of export volume during the latest 12 months was +0.7 per cent (12-month moving average June 2024 – May 2025). The corresponding figure for import volume was minus 0.5 per cent.

The terms of trade improved in May compared to the corresponding month of 2024 as export prices decreased less than import prices.

The point figure in May was 100.4, while it was 97.4 in May 2024. The terms of trade also improved from April 2025.

The value of exports of industrial supplies decreased by 8.3 per cent in May, and the value of exports of capital goods decreased by 12.6 per cent year-on-year. The value of exports of fuels and lubricants increased by 98.4 per cent. The value of exports of consumer goods declined by 7.2 per cent, and the value of exports of food and beverages increased by 5.6 per cent. The value of exports of transport equipment and parts decreased by 11.8 per cent.

The value of imports of industrial supplies decreased by 20.9 per cent in May, and the value of imports of capital goods decreased by 9.7 per cent year-on-year. The value of imports of transportation equipment and their parts declined by 13.9 per cent. The value of imports of fuels and lubricants increased by 55.4 per cent. The value of imports of food and beverages increased by 0.3 per cent, and the value of imports of consumer goods decreased by 0.9 per cent.

The value of exports to EU member states increased by 1.1 per cent, but the exports to other countries decreased by 14.4 per cent in May. Imports from EU countries decreased by 9.4 per cent, and imports from non-EU countries by 6.0 per cent in May.

In January-May, total value of exports to EU countries increased by 5.7 per cent and exports to countries outside the EU by 4.6 per cent. In the same period, import value from EU countries decreased by 0.9 per cent and from countries outside the EU by 3.2 per cent.

Earlier this month, Finnish Customs in its preliminary statistics said that the trade balance was in surplus of EUR 145 million in May.
