Staff suspected of secretly filming 230 girls in school dressing room

A staff of a school in Turku allegedly filmed girls in the dressing room of the school secretly, said police in a press release on Wednesday.

The suspect, a young man, who worked as a classroom assistant at St Olofsskolan school, installed a video camera and filmed about 230 girls of the school in between December 2021 and Spring 2022.

The Southwestern Finland Police sent letters to the affected students and their parents in July notifying them about the incident.

The police are investigating into the spying case and after the preliminary investigation, Detective Inspector Maria Sainio confirmed that no secret filming had taken place before or after the stipulated period.

According to the video recorded secretly, 35 of the girls were seen undressed in a way that made them victims of sexual exploitation crimes, said Sainio in the press release.

"In these cases, there is no legal time limit and police will be in contact with the victims personally," Sainio added.

Police arrested the suspect and later released him.

The suspect is also accused of distributing the indecent image.

"In the preliminary investigation, it has not been found that the secretly filmed videos were distributed anywhere,” Sainio said, adding that since the characteristics of the crime of distribution of a pornographic image also includes the production of such an image – in this case, illegal photography – this characteristics must also be taken into account.

The same person is also suspected of another incident of illegal filming, which was disclosed in May.
