Romania's meteorological service on Sunday issued its highest-level alert for extreme heat in two southwestern counties, warning that the heat wave will intensify, with maximum temperatures between 39 and 41 degrees Celsius expected on Monday and Tuesday, reported Xinhua.
The red alert, covering Mehedinti and Dolj counties, will be in force from 10 a.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday local time, with "intense and persistent heat, severe thermal discomfort and tropical nights," the National Meteorological Administration (ANM) said.
An orange alert for heat and high discomfort will also be in effect during the same period in Olt, Teleorman, Gorj and Valcea counties, with maximum temperatures ranging from 37 to 39 degrees Celsius and a temperature-humidity index above the critical threshold of 80 units.
From Sunday to Monday, another orange alert covers large parts of western and southern Romania, while yellow alerts for high temperatures extend to much of the rest of the country.
The national roads agency has announced that trucks over 7.5 tonnes will be banned from expressways and national roads in Mehedinti and Dolj on Monday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. local time, except for vehicles carrying passengers, perishable goods, fuel, medical supplies or other priority cargo.
