Germany to station 5 Eurofighter jets in Poland for several weeks

The German Air Force is to station five Eurofighter combat aircraft in Poland for several weeks, reported dpa.

From Tuesday, the Eurofighter jets will be deployed from the Minsk Mazowiecki military airfield, an air force spokesman told dpa.

According to the air force, the mission at the airfield east of Warsaw will last just under a month.

Around 150 soldiers from the Bundeswehr, Germany's military, are on site.

Poland is an important political and military supporter of Ukraine, which has been under attack from Russia for more than three years.

It also plays a central role as a hub for the West's military aid to Kiev.

The country also sees itself as threatened by Russia and is currently undergoing a massive rearmament programme.

Since April, the German Air Force has been supporting the Polish armed forces in monitoring Poland's airspace.

Until now, however, the fighter jets took off from Rostock, in north-eastern Germany.

The transfer was in response to a Polish request, the spokesman said.

Defence Minister Boris Pistorius had announced the move in January.

The aircraft will support the protection of airspace on the eastern flank of NATO, the Polish military's high command announced on X.

"This is another example of cooperation between the alliance partners and their genuine commitment to the security of Central Eastern Europe."
