German emergency services battle oil spill after ship collision

Two ships have collided in the German North Sea port of Cuxhaven, spilling an estimated 6,000 litres of oil into the water, the Maritime Emergency Command said, reported dpa.

No injuries were reported among the crew members.

Emergency personnel from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief and the fire department set up oil booms to contain the spill.

The 69-meter-long tanker Capella collided on Wednesday morning with the 44-meter offshore supply vessel Coastal Legend. The offshore vessel was damaged in the incident, leading to the leak.

It is still unclear how the accident happened.

"We currently estimate that there is 6,000 litres of oil," said a spokeswoman for the Cuxhaven Central Command. "There has been more oil in the port before. But every drop of oil we have in the water is too much."
