Insurance claims statistics showed that technical failures and tyre punctures are the most common reasons for becoming stranded on the road and Electric cars are especially prone to tyre punctures, said Pohjola Insurance (OP) in a press release on Wednesday.
During the summer, the roads get busier, which is also reflected in an increased need for towing services.
"According to Pohjola Insurance's statistics, the most common cause of a breakdown is a technical failure, such as a flat battery. The second most common reason is tyre punctures," said Sami Reinikka, Claims Team Manager of Pohjola Insurance.
Statistics by the towing and roadside assistance provider REDGO told a similar story. According to REDGO, the most common problems requiring towing involve the starter, engine or tyres.
Tyre punctures are increasingly common in vehicles of all fuel types. In the summer months, tyre punctures are among the most common reasons for towing assistance.
"Many drivers today don't necessarily know how to change a tyre. Towing or roadside assistance is increasingly needed, as new cars no longer include a spare tyre as a standard accessory. Insurance often covers the costs of a tyre change and towing, which is also reflected in towing statistics,” said Rene Hassinen, Network Manager of REDGO.
The punctured tyre itself is only covered by insurance if the puncture was caused by an external factor and the insurance includes collision cover, said Hassinen, adding that in this case, the deductible of the collision cover is applied to the compensation, and the claim reduces the no-claims bonus of the insurance.
"The emergency road service cover of comprehensive motor vehicle insurance covers towing costs resulting from a tyre puncture. In some cases, the costs of continuing the trip are also covered," Reinikka said.
In the case of electric vehicles, tyre punctures account for just over one in every four roadside assistance and towing needs.
"The larger mass and faster acceleration of electric cars, combined with the poor condition of Finnish roads, have all contributed to increased tyre problems, especially among electric cars," Reinikka said.
Battery failures are the most common cause of starting problems. Pohjola Insurance's statistics showed that the need for roadside assistance increases on hot days.
Hot weather takes a toll on cars in the same way as freezing temperatures. Battery failures are an especially common reason for cutting a trip short.
Hot weather can weaken the battery's condition to the extent of causing a failure and leaving the car stranded on the road.
"Heat, the use of air conditioning and driving short distances can drain the battery. During the summer, it is important to occasionally drive longer distances to give the battery time to recharge," Reinikka added.
In gasoline and diesel cars, engine problems are still a significant reason for needing towing assistance while in electric vehicles , problems with electrical systems are more commonplace.
