3 dead in highway crash in Greece

Three people were killed and several others injured Monday in a traffic accident on the Egnatia Highway near Komotini, northeastern Greece, authorities said, reported Xinhua.

The crash occurred near the Iasmos toll station when a truck collided with two cars, state broadcaster ERT reported.

One car caught fire, killing three occupants. A fourth passenger and the truck driver were seriously injured and taken to hospital, police said.

The victims had traveled from Epirus to Evros for a wedding and were returning when the collision happened, according to local media.

The impact also pushed a second car off course, but its three passengers escaped unharmed.

The fire spread to nearby farmland and forest. Firefighters, police and medics rushed to the scene, and the highway section between Komotini and Xanthi was closed.

Authorities said efforts to extinguish the blaze were ongoing and the cause of the accident was under investigation.
